What I have learnt about iMovie

Using the keyboard to manipulate audio/visuals

If you select the end of the clip you can use the keyboard to make the clip longer by pressing the keys 'option' and 'right arrow' so the clip is extended at the end. You can also add more to the start of the clip  by clicking at the start of it and pressing the 'option' and 'left arrow'

You can use the buttons 'shift' 'command' 's' to split a clip in two where you want it to be slpit. You just have to click in the place that you want your clip to be split. You can then add another clip in between those two clips.

You can change the speed of the clip by going into clip adjustments and using the slider or typing in the side what percentage you want your speed to go at to decide whether you want your clip to go faster or slower. You can also choose whether to play your clip in reverse by ticking the reverse button just underneath the speed one.

You can also choose an effect to put over your entire clip in the clip adjustments.

If you selcet a clip you can detach the audio from it so you can decide whether you want to trim it so that the audio starts or ends at a certain point or you can delete the audio so that you have no sound on that clip at all.
Clipping and trimming

Using the sliders at the bottom to adjust how much detail you see in each clip. So you change how many single frames you see in one clip.

You can select a section of the clip at the bottom and you drag it to the top and that is the section that you can edit to put into your video.

To edit the clip more precisely to the section that you want you can select the piece that you want at the top and then go to 'edit' at the top and then select 'trim to selection' and you clip will be trimmed to the area you selected.

Once you've selected the clip at the top you can click on the options button at the bottom left of the clip, from that you then click on 'click trimmer'. From that the clip will come up at the bottom and you can edit it so that the clip is longer of shorter.

If you have two clips on your film you can adjust the point that they hit by using the precision editor so you can decide when your first clip ends and where your second clip starts.

Using transitions

Once you've applied a transition inbetween the two clip you can click on 'clip trimmer' and edit the place on the clip that the transition starts to take place. You can also click on the second clip so that you can decide where the transition ends.

You can modify the length of each of the transitions by clicking on transition adjustments and typing in how long you want the transition to last.

You can make more transitions available to you by setting a theme for your video.

f you choose to have advanced transitions in your movie then you can choose where you want the transition to start and end using the pin point buttons.

-applying effects - double click icon
how to make transitions longer and the edit them to be precisely where you want them.
-if you go into themes you can get additional transitions to use
Layering audio and visuals

You can also add text onto your clip by clicking on the titles button and it will give you a range of different ways of which text can be added onto your clip. You just drag whatever title that you want over onto that clip that you want it to be on and then you can type in whatever text that you want to be there. If you only want the text to be over a small part of your clip you can just drag the text so that it id just on the side of the clip. You can then go onto the precision editor so that you can precisely put the text where you want it to be in the clip.

Advanced features of iMovie

You can stabilize the part of the clip you are using by going into clip adjustments and ticking the smooth clip motion box at the bottom.

Costume Ideas*

As the title of the song we are doing for our video is 'International' which means more than two countries joining together, we decided that it would be a good idea to have our actor in different costumes from different countries to represent the different countries coming together. We decided that we need to get costumes that were easily accessible so we chose a cowboy, a Chinese man, an ancient egyptian, a frenchman. We chose these costumes as they are very representative of the country that they are from. There are costumes from all over the world to represent the people all over the world, emphasising the word 'International'.
Cowboy
  • Red checked shirt - we chose red as it predominantly represents violence and cowboys are well known for being violent and often breaking out in fights.
  • Blue denim jeans - these jeans are a really casual item of clothing, this goes well with the stereo-typically laid back and freelancing personality of a cowboy.
  • Brown Cowboy boots - we decided the boots should be fairly worn, we decided this as we wanted to show that the cowboy had been around for a long time
  • Cowboy hat - we chose a brown cowboy hat for our cowboy to wear. We chose the colour brown as it signifies stability, structure and support. It is a colour that blends into the natural environment making it a great colour for camouflaging, this could represent the cowboys shadowed personality and that no-one really knows what he is about.

South Asian Man

  • Kurta - A kurta is a long collarless shirt traditionally worn in south Asian countries. I chose to use the colour white for the kurta as the colour represents purity and good and this represents the good a kind nature of these people as most of them are religious.
  • Blue Jeans - a kurta is very often worn with blue jeans as the colours of the kurtas mostly all go with jeans. Blue is also a very calm colour which represents there personality.
  • Brown sandals - I chose sandals as it is mostly hot in south Asia so these are the types of shoes they would be wearing and also brown is a very down to earth and in touch with nature colour.

Egyptian
  • White toga - We chose this as the colour white represents purity
  • Gold headwear and jewellery (bracelet/bangles) - In ancient Egypt all of the pharoahs and rich people would wear gold to represent their wealth, success and triumph. The richer you were the more gold possessions you would have.
  • Brown Leather Shoes - As Egypt is a hot country they used to wear quite loose shoes and shoes that would also protect their feet form the hot desert sand below. The colour brown also represents the egyptian as being in touch with nature.

Frenchman
  • Breton striped t-shirt (blue and white) - this t-shirt was worn by the french navy seamen introduced in 1858.  Famous French fashion designer Coco Chanel introduced the top to her collection in 1917. This makes the top very iconic to France which is why we decided to use it for out french man.
  • Blue trousers - blue trousers are a very smart type of trouser to wear and the french are well known for being very stiff upper lift lip so its conforms to that stereotype.
  • Burgundy shoes
  • Black scarf

Audience Testing*

Chase and Status are known for having the type of music that you would listen to at an illegal rave and a few of their videos are based on that so we decided to go for the same sort of idea. The fact that someone has said that it looks like some sort of illegal rave shows that the location is right.

Chase and Status's brand identity is that they are very stereotypically English and we tried to keep to that in out video. The fact that someone has said that it looks very British shows that the concept has an overall feel of britishness.

Considering someone has said that they like certain editing elements shows that the same kind of thing should be used in our next video. We were thinking of having more than one cast member in our video but it seems to be more effective to just have one.

Rough Cut*

Initial ideas for your music video*

The song that we chose to do for our music video was 'International' by Chase and Status. We decided that as the song doesn't have any lyrics and has a crazy, upbeat tune to it we would do a performance based video instead of a narrative. Something like the Chase and Status video 'No Problem'.

We decided for our video that it would be good to have people dressed in different costumes from different nations and have them all come together to match with the title of out song 'international', all the characters would be dancing to the song in an un-choreographed way to go with the crazy beat of the song. We thought that the video should be set in some sort of deserted setting such as a warehouse or an old building to go with the idea of some sort of illegal rave/party, the room would have to be fairly large to get all of the people we want in and we would have to ask for permission to be on the site.  Then maybe to have a contrast with that have some sort of quintessentially english feature in the middle of the deserted place such as a dining table with teacups and cakes. Another idea we had was maybe the use of powder bombs or paint splats to go with the party vibe of the song. For the camera angles, effects and transitions in the video we thought that it would be good to have a warped effect to the video to again go with the crazy, party theme of the video.

Analysis of track lyrics*

Chase and Status - International
There are no clear lyrics to this song, the only lyric that you an pick out is the word 'international' which carries on throughout the song. As it is also the title of the song it is a very prominent word. The word international means the interaction between more than one country, the kind of imagery this creates is of people that are all different coming together. The word represents friendliness and being connected. The song is very repetitive with the same beats and words throughout. This could represent that things are always the same, people from different countries are the same. There is the sound of sirens throughout the song, this kind of build up the image of chaos.
The is also a bit of a reggae in the song that could show a kind of mellow vibe in the song or represent drug use.

Directors' previous music videos*

Alex Southam

Alex Southam was the director of the Chase and Status video 'Lost and Not Found'. He also directed Laura Mvula's video 'She' and Alt-J's video ' Tessellate'. He has also has created videos for  Lianne Le HavasJamie N CommonsThe Walkmen and Mika

'Chase and Status - Lost and Not Found'
In this video he used a roving camera POV to give the effect that someone is wandering about at random over a fairly large area and everyone is connected in some way. It gives the effect that the video is shot in one single shot. Throughout the whole video there are people in some quite painful positions, the man in the bathtub crying and the man getting high and at the end at the guy getting arrested and the girl getting him out of the situation, all of these situations could represent some sort of heartache that the people are going through. The lyrics in the chorus are "I’m never gonna let you go. I’m never gonna let you down. The heart has taken control. There’s no one around" these lyrics seem to mean the uncontrollable love that you can have for somebody and these lyrics are the ones that seem to be represented throughout the video. The whole video is set in slow motion and comes back to the same boy that is at the beginning.

'Laura Mvula - She'
Alex also directed Laura Mvula's video 'She' which has almost the same sort of effect in the video of a roving camera POV. The storyline of the video is almost the same as the chase and status one as it is filmed from the perspective of a girl watching life around her. This video like the lost and not found on both are set in the past, and both have the effect of time moving onwards and at the end they both come back to the same point at the end. In the Laura Mvula video its the exact same shot of the girl at the beginning and in the chase and status video its the same boy on his bike. The difference between the videos is that the Laura Mvula video switches to a bit of a performance based video with Laura singing whereas the Chase and Status video is completely narrative based.

Daniel Wolfe
Daniel Wolfe directed the Chase and Status video 'Blind Faith'. He also directed Plan B's video 'Prayin' as well as many other short films and television advertisements for brands such as 'San Miguel'.

'Chase and Status - Blind Faith'
This video is set in the early 1990's and is about the illegal warehouse raves that used to go on. The video had a kind of vintage feel it to give it the effect that it was actually set in the 1990's. The track lyrics are about the release that you can get from drug use and the video represents that by showing drug use. It is quite an open video as you can either condone with drug use of not, its a video that lets you have an open opinion which is what the song lyrics are like. The video is narrative based but it ends up quite performance based as they are all in the warehouse and the lights and the people dancing all match to the beat of the song and Liam Bailey the singer of the song is performing to the crowd of people and Chase and status are seen on the dj set.

'Plan B - Prayin'
The video for Plan B is a different to the Chase and status video as it is quite a sad video throughout and based on things that are quite deep whereas the Chase and Status video is fun. It still has the same idea of people commiting crime in the video as the whole video is set in a prison and the actors are all playing prisoners. In the video the prisoners randomly start dancing during a work out session and some of the prisons wives/girlfriends start dancing aswell during their meeting session. Then when the police officers turn off the football match, the prisons rebel with dance. The whole thing is made to looks as if the prisoners are rioting against the police using their dancing as a weapon. This Is similar to the Chase and Status video in that the people are going to illegal raves to dance, so in both video dance is used to fight back at the law. A difference with this video is that Plan B is used as the main character in the video and lip-sinks a lot in the song whereas in the Blind Faith video Chase and Status are more just extras in the video and don't have much of a part.

Music Videos

No Problem ft. Takura (2011)

This video is a performance based video. The character of this video dressed in African clothing but is made to look more funky with luminous lights bouncing of the white. The guy that is singing the song sounds like he has an African accent, so the African dress represents that African vibe to the song. The song has a very upbeat tune to it and the bright contrasts in colours and the flashiness of the video work well with the song as it almost looks like lights in the video. There is a slight rippling effect on the face of the guy at one point, this goes with the lyrics 'I move like water, I go with the flow'.

End Credits ft. Plan B (2009)

This video is a performance/narrative based video. Most of the clips in the video are from the crime/thriller film Harry Brown as the song was the soundtrack for the movie. At the beginning of the video a guy has fallen off a building and as he starts to sing hes is dying, this matched the lyrics as the say 'when the blood dries in my veins, and my heart feels no more pain'. As the story goes on it seems like a flash back of his life as you can see him as a kind of ghost watching all the bad things he has done whilst singing the song.

Time ft. Delilah (2011)

The video for this song is mostly narrative based but there are a few parts where it slightly becomes performance based with the artist singing the lyrics of the song. The video was created to create awareness for the charity Refuge for women and children against domestic violence. The storyline of the video is from the perspective of a teenage girl who's father beats her mother and it shows her struggle with it. It is a very sad and somber video, and it shows the pain that both the mother and the girl have to go through. The whole video is very dull with no bright colours. The lyrics of the song go well with the video as they are about having a hard time in love.

Similarities

  • Both the 'Time' and the 'End Credits' videos are quite moving, they both have a deep meaning to them addressing issues that many people may face.
  • They all use lipsinking in their videos.
  • All fast during the chorus and the transitions, effects and camera movements are all quick.
Differences
  • 'No Problem' is a fun video whilst the others are all quite somber.

Album Covers

More Than Alot (2006 - 2009) The album cover is quite bright and bold. They have mad the album have quite a party/club tune look with the pink paint splats, bold font and the contrast between the black and the pink which makes it look like pink lights in a dark room.

No More Idols (2009-2011) This album cover has a very quintessentially British look to it with the bulldog on the front, which represents this album as most of the songs are about thing that happen in England and most of the artists that they collaborate with on this album are British.

Brand New Machine (2012 - present) This album cover again gives the idea of a party image with the corkscrew on the front and the smiley face on it which is often used to symbolize party drugs.

Similarities

  • Bold, contrasting colours are used on all of album covers.
Differences
  • A different font is used on the 2nd and 3rd albums compared to the 1st.
  • A different colour is used for each album cover
Transitions the band have made
  • They have gone from having a very party imagine, to not much of one, and then back to their party imagine again.
  • Their font for their name changed on the second album and they have stuck with it.

In these album covers the ones that have been used earlier on whilst their first album was out have have a different font for their names compared to the newer posters. They all have very bold colours on their posters. On their newest poster their is more adverts for other things as the band have got more well renound.

Narrative and performance based music videos*

Narrative Based
Kylie – Come into my world
At the start of the video Kylie is walking through the street as chaos unfolds around her and everyone is going around their own business and taking no notice of her. As she goes round again she appears again so there are two of them and picks up something that the previous she dropped. This could symbolize that she is learning from her mistakes in the past. Each time she goes around another one of her appears, as well as an extra person of everyone else in the scene and each time all of their stories slightly change, and because she does something different every time its like the butterfly effect where every action has a consequence.  The video is also filmed like the camera is going round in a circle, like the world going round and round which symbolizes each day as time goes on. At the end as the camera is still moving it fades out to give the effect that even though the video has ended it still goes on.

Performance Based
Daft Punk – Around the World
The video starts with lots of different people in different costumes going different dance around a large circular stage. As the song is called ‘around the world’ the different costumes symbolize different countries as there are Mummies (Egypt) and Jocks (USA) and there are also skeletons that could represent the people that have lived. The round stage could represent the world. The stage also has some bits higher that other, this could represent the ups and downs of world events. Each of the types of character are moving to the different beats of the song such as the synchronized swimmers are dancing to the hi-hat notes and the mummies are dancing to the bass notes. As the video draws closer to the end the dancer start dancing more in sync until finally at the end they are all dancing the same dance, this symbolizes that even though everyone is different we all come together and are all connected.
